The sword is missing the original scabbard. It has all of the spring style wire wrapped around the wooden core. This one would have originally had the sharkskin grip on the handle and it only has traces remaining. At the very top of the pommel cap it has the droop wing style naval eagle. It has the bold "USN" in the basket of the guard and the quillion is made like a serpent's head. The guard and pommel cap have always stood apart from the normal Civil War officer's sword. It then has the anchor design with the stand of arms above and the flag with the "USN" in the center of the flag. Many quality edged weapons were made in Europe for private sale to well to do Union officers. On the back side of the blade from the Horstmann mark it has the king's head marking that lets us know that it was made for Horstmann in Solingen, Germany. On the front side of the blade it has the vividly clear "W.H. The etching on the back of the blade has anchor towards the middle of the blade and on down towards the tip it has the flags and spears with "USN" on the banner. The blade is full length and is etched on each side with patriotic and other designs. model 1852 naval officer's sword, this is the style that was worn by naval officers during the Civil War.
